Ram

(Microgeophagus Ramirezi)

Picture
This is one of the most colourful fish in todays aquarium trade but it isn't very easy to keep. It has varying colours with a blue body with yellow, black, dark blue, red and orange markings. Females can sometimes be identified by pink markings on their bellies but this is not always the case. They must be kept in a well planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a pair will usually make a territory with a flat rock in it on which they may spawn. They should be kept in pairs in a fairly big aquarium as a group may fight. There should be plenty of space in the tank for other fish to get away if they do spawn as They will guard their fry viciously. The parents will take care of their young from birth till about 3-4 months of age.
