Platy

(Xiphophorus Maculatus)

Picture
The platy is an extremley popular aquarium fish that is great for a small community aquarium. It's colours vary greatly, from deep blues to bright reds. There are also different varients such as the micky mouse platy which gets it's name from the three spots near the base of it's tail to the hi-fin platy with an elongated dorsal fin. There are in fact so many varients that 325,000 varients could be created without hybridizing the platy with other Xiphophorus species such as the swordtail. They are great little community fish and look best in shoals. They can be bred easily and usually no effort from the aquarist is required for them to reproduce although they may eat their young.
