Picture

The males have modified anal fins called gonopodium which is used for internal egg fertalisation, enabling females to give birth to living fish. The females just have a double set of normal anal fins. The chart opposite can be used as a reference to quickly and easily identify male and female livebearers. it is useful to be able to tell the difference at a glance as most livebearers should be kept in groups of more females than males, meaning that when at an aquatic shop, you can pick out fish of the correct gender.
