Glossary

Saltwater-Water that contains lots of salt and has a specific gravity of 1.015-1.030.
Brackish Water-Water that is slightly salty and has a specific gravity of 1.002-1.010.
Freshwater-Water that contains no salts and has a specific gravity of 1.000.
Substrate-The base covering of the auarium, usually gravel or sand.
Gills-The breathing mechanism that fish use to extract oxygen from the water.
External Power Filter-A filter, usually shaped like a canister that can be housed under the aquarium in the cabinet.
Internal Filter-A filter that is situated inside the aquarium.
Inert-Something that will not affect the aquarium's water quality.
Nano Aquarium-A small aquarium, usually holding less than 40 liters.
Marine-Saltwater life and the sea.
Aquaria-Another word for aquarium.
Egg depositing-Fish that lay their eggs on an object or plant.
Egg Scattering-Fish that scatter their eggs around the aquarium.
Livebearing-Fish that give birth to live young.
Fry-Baby fish
Brood-A batch of baby fish or fry.
Specific Gravity-The salt content of a volume of water, measured with a SG meter.
